Juneberrries

This property is so full of surprises. Today I discovered that the tree in the front yard is a Juneberry or Serviceberry tree. How perfect! This fits right into our goal to have more edible landscaping.

Juneberries are a wonderful fruit that are native to North America. They were sold in markets many, many years ago but for some reason have now fallen out of favor. You can use them to make pies, jam, icecream...and you can make Juneberry wine. Can't wait to try that one! They are sweet with a little bit of a nutty taste too. They are a little like blueberries but not as tart and they are very high in vitamin C.

I was on a ladder today picking berries off the tree with the birds. The birds love the berries too and will often pick Juneberry trees clean. Luckily for us, our tree is so full of fruit that there is more than enough for us and the birds.
